About

Core Values

Redstone embraces four core values that have remained the foundation of our firm for nearly twenty years. These values have helped us grow into a law firm that is recommended by clients and create a culture that is desirable in which to practice.

Hard Work

Hard work is a commitment to doing it right the first time. We do what it takes to accomplish the best result for our client under the circumstances both legally and ethically.

At Redstone, we demonstrate hard work through the:

  • Quality of our work product
  • Advice we confidentially communicate to our clients
  • Years of experience necessary to be able to deliver legal advice

Good Judgment

Good Judgment means carefully analyzing a problem or opportunity and weighing numerous possible tactics and outcomes. While challenges and opportunities have legal implications, decisions involve many non-legal factors that need to be considered in providing sound counsel.

At Redstone, we exercise good judgment by:

  • Considering many factors in delivering our legal counsel
  • Basing and balancing our counsel on our real life experiences
  • Relying on our extensive experience and history representing clients in a wide variety of matters

Collegial Work Environment

Collegial Work Environment means the Redstone team works together with mutual respect. With mutual respect that has cultivated a culture that is professional, rewarding and enjoyable.

Redstone is a:

  • Professional and pleasant place to work and provide legal services to clients
  • Cohesive team with many members who have been with us for over 15 years
  • Place where every team member works hard and exercises good judgment

Make It Better

Make It Better means Redstone works as a team to improve:

  • Clients through providing legal advice
  • Colleagues as a resource in our practice areas and by volunteering our time to provide continuing legal education to the State Bar
  • Community service in non-profit organizations and other civic roles
  • Churches through the donation of our time, treasures and talents
  • Capitol by assisting elected officials and helping bring economic development to South Dakota to provide better and higher paying jobs for the citizens of this great state

Our Story

Jeremiah Murphy

Redstone was formed nearly twenty years ago by Jeremiah D. Murphy (1930-2011), Vance Goldammer and Terry Prendergast. Matthew McCaulley and James E. McMahon (former U.S. Attorney for the State of South Dakota) joined the firm shortly after it was formed.

We've built a team of professionals who share common core values. We work together to deliver the best advice and achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients. While the world around us changes, our core values of Hard Work, Good Judgment, Collegial Work Environment, and Make It Better remain constant—forming a solid foundation to serve our clients now and in the future.

A key part of our firm’s history was Jeremiah D. Murphy, one of our founding partners. At the time of his passing, Jeremiah had practiced law and lobbied in the South Dakota Legislature for over 50 years. Between them, Jere and his father, John S. Murphy, lobbied in the South Dakota Legislature for nearly two-thirds of all South Dakota legislative sessions since statehood. Jeremiah D. Murphy helped define our core values, and was a mentor to younger lawyers as he gently guided them on their journey to becoming good lawyers and good people.

Redstone’s past experience and future vision uniquely position us to meet the challenges of a changing world and provide our clients with a foundation where they can build on our experience.

Redstone Alumni

Since our firm's inception, Redstone has had many successful lawyers with notable achievements. Jeremiah D. Murphy played a significant role in developing our staff and law firm into who we are today:

Jeremiah D. Murphy (1930-2011) was one of the founding partners of Murphy, Goldammer & Prendergast (now Redstone Law Firm). He received his B.A. degree from Creighton College of Commerce with a B.S.C degree and a major in accounting. Following his time in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant, he earned his law degree from Georgetown University. In his lifetime, Murphy had practiced law and lobbied in the South Dakota Legislature for over 50 years. He helped define our firm's core values and was a remarkable mentor to younger lawyers.

Recognition

Our clients trust our judgment, and we appreciate the confidence our clients have shown in us.

Redstone is also honored by the recognition of our peers, as four of our attorneys have been awarded the coveted Martindale-Hubbell “AV Preeminent Rating” with respect to our legal ability and general ethical standards.

Jennifer Bunkers PR AV 200

Our firm has continuously been rated by Chambers USA, which recognizes “America’s Leading Lawyers” and their firms. In addition, U.S. News & World Report named Redstone as one of the best law firms in South Dakota, awarding Redstone a prestigious "First-Tier Ranking" in 2021.

We are also humbled by the longevity of service from our Redstone Team—with some of our legal assistants working with us for over 20 years.

The Redstone Name

Redstone Law Firm LLP

We chose the name Redstone for the next generation of our firm after much research and debate. We hired a team of professionals to help us choose a name that was traditional yet contemporary.

Naming a law firm without identifying a current or former partner has not been a common practice for firms in South Dakota. We don’t fault those that do as it is consistent with a rich tradition of legal history. The legal profession is slow to change and that’s understandable. However, in the face of a rapidly changing world economy, the need for candid counsel, stability, consistency and certainty has never been greater.

Based on our research and experience, we concluded that changing the name of the firm as partners change causes confusion for our clients, vendors, the community and for our colleagues as well.

We chose the name Redstone because:

  1. Our clients tell us they don’t like long firm names.
  2. It’s easy to spell.
  3. It reflects the unique legal history of the quartzite rock in and around Sioux Falls. In fact, the quartzite rock that is the bedrock of downtown Sioux Falls was used in the construction of the Minnehaha County Courthouse and the current Federal Courthouse located downtown.
  4. It emphasizes the unique history of our firm, which traces its roots to the earliest lawyers in Sioux Falls.
  5. South Dakota is our primary practice area, and quartzite pillars were originally used to mark the legal boundaries for the State of South Dakota.
  6. The name reflects our core values and commitment to rock-solid legal advice.

As we continue to build a firm based on our core values and practice areas, Redstone Law Firm is a name that can withstand the test of time. We’re proud to serve both long-standing and new clients under this name.

Redstone Law Firm is excited to announce its upcoming move to south central Sioux Falls in October 2020!

At Redstone, we pride ourselves on constantly living out our core values, and that includes “making it better.” We listened to comments from many of our clients and thoughtfully selected the best location to enhance your experience as a Redstone client.

While we enjoyed serving you from downtown these past two decades, our new location addresses many of the concerns we heard from our clients such as:

  • Easier access
  • Prominent signage
  • Additional client privacy
  • Larger conference room space

With close access to I-229, our new location offers convenient parking near the building’s main entrance with quick and easy access to Redstone’s first floor suite.

Effective October 19, 2020, our new address will be:

1300 W 57th St
Suite 101
Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57108
